In 1720, Paul Danei, later known as St. Paul of the Cross, at the age of 26, retired to a hermitage in Tuscany and founded the Congregation of the Clerics Carmelites of the Most Holy Cross and Passion our Lord Jesus Christ after having the vision of Christ dressed in a black tunic with a heart and inscribed "Passion of Christ" or "Passion of Christ". This is to spread devotion to the Passion of Christ by itinerant preaching and spiritual retreats.
